Guide to Ounasvaara in Rovaniemi: Winter Trail, Viewpoints & How to Get There

Everything you need to know about visiting Ounasvaara Hill in winter: viewpoints, scenic tower, walking trails, campfire hut, map, bus access and local tips.

If you’re looking for one place in Rovaniemi that gives you forests, panoramic views, easy walking trails, and it’s completely free, Ounasvaara is probably the best choice. Unlike many attractions in Lapland, you don’t need to book a tour or rent a car. The hill sits right next to Rovaniemi city centre, making it one of the easiest nature spots to visit during a winter holiday.

The Ounasvaara Winter Trail begins just 1.6 km from Rovaniemi city centre, making it one of the easiest winter walks in Lapland without a car.

The trail follows marked winter walking paths through snowy spruce forests, rocky viewpoints and scenic lookouts across Rovaniemi. Along the route you’ll find the Scenic Tower, two campfire shelters, rest benches and several access points, so you can walk the full loop or choose a shorter section.

The maintained winter trail is available from approximately November to April, depending on snow conditions.

In this guide, I’ll show you the exact walking route locals use, the best viewpoints, how to get there without a car, and a few tips that most travel guides don’t mention.

Ounasvaara is perfect for: first-time visitors, photographers, families, northern lights seekers, and anyone looking for free things to do in Rovaniemi.

Why I recommend Ounasvaara

Why it’s worth visiting?Details
Minutes from the city centreOnly short walk from the city centre
Completely freeNo entrance ticket, no reservation needed.
Easy winter trailsWell-maintained walking paths even in winter.
Incredible viewpointsSunrise, sunset, city skyline and frozen forests.
Campfire hutBring sausages or snacks and warm up by the fire.
Good northern lights potentialDarker than the city and easy to reach.

If you only have 2–3 days in Rovaniemi, I’d still recommend making time for Ounasvaara.

It’s one of the few places where you can experience Lapland’s snowy forests without driving outside the city. In less than half an hour (by foot!) you can go from cafés and shops in the city centre to quiet forest trails surrounded by snow-covered trees.

Unlike many winter activities in Lapland, Ounasvaara is also incredibly flexible. You can spend 30 minutes walking to a viewpoint, hike the full trail for a few hours, have lunch by a campfire, or come back after dark to watch for northern lights.

My extra tip: Visit during blue hour (about 30–60 minutes after sunset in winter). The snowy trees turn pastel pink and purple, exactly like the photos in this guide.

    Where is Ounasvaara?

Ounasvaara sits immediately east of Rovaniemi city centre, on the opposite side of the Kemijoki River. It’s so close that you can walk there directly from the centre using the Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge (Jätkänkynttilä Bridge).

    Walking distances

    Starting point (google maps links)Distance
Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge5–10 minute walk to trail entrance.
SantaSportAlmost direct access to the Winter Walking Trail.
Sky Ounasvaara Hotel5 minutes walk to the summit viewpoint.
Rovaniemi city centre20–30 minute walk depending on your route.
Rovaniemi Main Hospital15 min walk to the nearest starting point.

    Ounasvaara Map

The Ounasvaara Winter Trail has five official access points, but most visitors use one of four: the city centre entrance near Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge, SantaSport (has 2 points), Sky Hotel Ounasvaara or longer route starting point near Rovaniemi Hospital.

The full maintained winter route is approximately 8.6 km including connecting trails, but you can easily turn it into a much shorter walk by starting from SantaSport or Sky Hotel. (Link to the Rovaniemi City Ounasvaara Winter Trail Official Map)

    Best viewpoints in Ounasvaara

    1. Ounasvaara Scenic Tower

Standing about 160 metres above sea level, the wooden Ounasvaara observation tower overlooks the city centre and the Kemijoki River from Ounasvaara’s western hillside The tower offers magnificent views over the city centre and the Kemijoki River. There is a log-built lean-to next to the observation tower, as well as a campfire site and woodshed.

    2. Juhannuskallio Lookout

Located next to Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara, Juhannuskallio is elevated spot at Ounasvaara with view far to the distance in every direction. Juhannuskallio is technically the highest natural point on this part of Ounasvaara. However, the Tottorakka lift station and ski slope sit slightly higher on the modified slope profile, giving you a clearer view over the treetops and towards the horizon.

    3. Tottorakka Lookout / Lift Station

Tottorakka ski lift station and is one of the best viewpoints on Ounasvaara for wide, unobstructed views over Rovaniemi. The open hillside gives you wide views over Rovaniemi, the Kemijoki River and the surrounding forests. That open slope is exactly why Tottorakka is one of the nicest places on Ounasvaara to watch the northern lights if they are bright enough. With very few trees blocking the sky, it’s also a fantastic spot for blue hour, sunrise and sunset photography.

How to Get to Ounasvaara Without a Car

The Ounasvaara Winter Trail can be accessed at several points: the starting point nearest the city centre is after crossing the Lumberjack Bridge and Jäämerentie, to the left from the cycle path and up to Ounasvaara.

The second entrance is next to SantaSport. Across the road you’ll see a small parking area and an outdoor football field. You can join the Winter Trail from either side of the field, but the left-hand entrance is the quickest route to the Scenic Tower and the summit viewpoints.

Another starting point is at the Lapland Hotel Sky Ounasvaara, which is close to the Ounasvaara Cabins and SantaSport. Little walk to the uphill from SantaSport and you are basically on the top of the “mountain”.

Option 1 — Walk from the city centre

    • 20–30 minutes.
    • Cross the Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge.
    • Follow signs towards the Winter Walking Trail.

Perfect if you’re staying in central Rovaniemi.

    Option 2 — Local Bus

Several buses stop near SantaSport and Main hospital everyday (Line number 5). Good option if you’re staying farther away, or near by.

If you don’t want to walk uphill from the city centre, you can hop to the trail from right across the street from SantaSport. Then you can either go all the way up to the Juhannuskallio or Tottorakka, or just stay at Scenic Tower, and walk your way back to the city.

What to Expect on the Winter Trail

Don’t expect a full wilderness hike. The Winter Trail is a maintained walking trail, separate from the cross-country ski tracks. During winter it’s packed by snowmobile, making it easy to walk with normal winter boots on most days.

Along the trail you’ll walk through spruce forests, open rocky viewpoints and pine forest. The western side of the trail is also illuminated, making it a nice option during the darker winter months.

    Is the trail difficult?

    Good to knowAnswer
Steep hills?A few uphill sections. Can be mainly avoided if starting from SantaSport.
    Suitable for children?Yes.
Suitable for strollers?Weather depended. If ground is fully frozen, many parts of the track are ok with strollers.
    Need snowshoes?No need.

And if you still feel like you do not want to do this trip as a “DIY” trip, you can always book a tour from local tour companies.
You will get transport to the starting point, and you have a guide with you all the time. Usually tours also include hot drink and small snacks.

    Fireplace & picnic tips

One of the best parts of Ounasvaara is that you can actually stop for lunch in the middle of the forest. Next to Scenic Tower there’s a shelter (laavu) with a campfire place and woodshed. It’s a popular place among locals for grilling sausages, drinking coffee or simply warming up during a winter walk.

Note that firewood is often available, but it’s never guaranteed. During high season, sometimes woodshed might be out of wood, due to high demand.

    What to bring

    • Food! Like, sausages, corn, or sandwiches. Some people take time and even make full stake dinners by the fire. (Takes long time btw.)
    • Matches or a lighter.
    • Hot chocolate, hot juice or coffee and drinking water.
    • Something to sit on if the benches are snowy, and you don’t want your ass wet.

    Best Time to Visit Ounasvaara

    MonthWhat it’s like
Late NovemberThe first snow usually arrives, but won’t stay yet. So snowy days and rainy days. Based totally on your luck.
DecemberSnow-covered trees are usually here by the mid December, but daylight is very limited because of the polar night.
JanuaryPeak winter scenery with thick snow on the trees, cold temperatures, and beautiful pastel-coloured blue hour very very often.
FebruaryThe best month to visit Ounasvaara in my opinion: snowy trees, longer daylight hours, and incredible sunrise and sunset colours.
MarchLonger, sunnier days make hiking more comfortable, but the trees are often less snowy after weeks of wind and warmer weather.

Can You See Northern Lights from Ounasvaara?

Yes, but with realistic expectations. Ounasvaara is darker than Rovaniemi city centre, making it one of the easiest places to watch northern lights without leaving the city. Ounasvaara is a great DIY aurora spot, but it’s not a guaranteed northern lights location. Visibility always depends on solar activity, clouds and moonlight.

Because you’re still close to the city, very weak auroras can be hidden by light pollution. Strong displays, however, are often clearly visible from Ounasvaara.

Ounasvaara is a good place to watch northern lights on your own, but if seeing the auroras is your priority, renting a car or a guided tour* takes you farther away from city lights.

    Where to Stay on Ounasvaara

If you want to wake up surrounded by snowy forest instead of staying in Rovaniemi city centre, Ounasvaara has a handful of excellent accommodation options. They’re all located on the hill itself, giving you direct access to the Winter Trail, viewpoints and ski slopes.

Staying in Ounasvaara is actually one of my personal favourite options for accommondation around Rovaniemi, as it is in nature, but still very close to city and has a good public transport options.

    Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara

Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara sits at the highest point of Ounasvaara, just a few minutes from the summit viewpoint. It’s the most iconic hotel on the hill thanks to its panoramic restaurant overlooking Rovaniemi and the surrounding forests.

    • Walking distance to the summit viewpoint.
    • Direct access to the Winter Trail.
    • One of the best restaurants with a view in Rovaniemi.
    • Great choice for a romantic winter getaway.

Arctic Panorama Resort & Spa is one of the newest accommodation options on Ounasvaara. While it doesn’t have direct access to the Ounasvaara Winter Trail, it’s still located on the same hill, so you’ll enjoy very similar forest and views. The resort also has its own walking paths and peaceful outdoor areas, making it a great option if you’re looking for a quieter stay away from the ski slopes and busier viewpoints.

Note that on that side of the hill there is no public transport options near by.
