So the question isn’t really which one is better?
It’s which one fits the kind of Lapland trip you want to have?

Rovaniemi is a city in Finnish Lapland, with restaurants, shops, supermarkets, public transport and everyday services alongside its many Lapland experiences. Levi, on the other hand, is a fell resort built around skiing, outdoor activities and resort life.

Neither is automatically better.

The right choice depends on what you want your Lapland holiday to feel like.

First, Understand the Biggest Difference

Levi is not simply a smaller version of Rovaniemi. And Rovaniemi is not a less exciting version of Levi. The easiest way to understand Rovaniemi and Levi is to forget about the activities for a moment.

Think about the destinations themselves.

Rovaniemi is a city

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and a real working city. That means you get something you might not expect when planning a Lapland holiday: normal city life.

You will find supermarkets, shopping centres, restaurants, cafés, pharmacies and other everyday services. The city centre is relatively compact, and many things can be reached on foot. At the same time, you are still very much in Lapland.

You can see the Northern Lights, go on a husky safari, visit Santa Claus Village, go snowmobiling, explore snowy forests and take day trips into the surrounding region. This combination is what makes Rovaniemi particularly easy for a first Lapland trip.

You can have a proper winter wonderland experience without giving up the convenience of staying in a city.

Levi is a fell resort

Levi is something completely different.

It is a resort built around Levi Fell, with skiing, outdoor activities, restaurants, accommodation and après-ski life forming a big part of the experience.

You do not come to Levi because you want to experience a Finnish city. You come because you want to be surrounded by fells, snow and outdoor activities while still having a lively resort centre.

And you do not have to be a skier to enjoy Levi. Winter activities include snowmobiling, husky and reindeer experiences, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and Northern Lights tours. There are also restaurants, cafés, spas and other things to do when you are not outside.

So while Rovaniemi feels like a city in Lapland, Levi feels more like a holiday resort in the middle of Lapland.

Rovaniemi – What Is It Like?

Why choose Rovaniemi?

Rovaniemi is probably the easiest destination to recommend if this is your first trip to Lapland and you want to experience several different sides of the region. It is also home to one of the biggest reasons international visitors come here in the first place: Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle.

Rovaniemi may be the better choice if you want a mixture of:

• Santa Claus experiences
• restaurants and cafés
• shopping
• easy logistics
• organised winter activities
• day trips
• city comforts
• access to nature

Another major advantage is that you can do quite a lot without renting a car or even using taxis. The city centre is walkable, although not every attraction is within walking distance. Santa Claus Village, for example, is outside the city centre, but busses are going there multiple times a day.

Most organised activities can also include transportation from the city or Santa Village, making it possible to build a fairly full Lapland itinerary without driving yourself.

Rovaniemi is therefore particularly convenient if you want to combine several experiences during a short holiday. You could spend one day visiting Santa Claus Village, another day on a husky or reindeer experience, an evening hunting for the Northern Lights and another day exploring the surrounding nature.

Levi – What Is It Like?

Why choose Levi?

Levi is a great choice if you want your Lapland holiday to revolve more around outdoor activities, the fell landscape and resort life.

The obvious attraction is skiing. Levi is one of Finland’s best-known ski destinations, and the fell landscape gives the area a very different atmosphere from Rovaniemi.

But skiing is not the only reason to visit.

Levi may be a better match if you want:

• skiing and snowboarding
• fell scenery
• lots of outdoor activities
• a resort atmosphere
• après-ski and evening entertainment
• a cabin holiday
• easy access to winter sports
• a more traditional ski-resort experience

There is also a practical advantage to Levi: snow conditions are generally more reliable than in Rovaniemi, particularly earlier in the winter. That does not mean Levi is guaranteed to have perfect snow on every day of every winter. Weather varies.

But its more northerly location and the ski resort’s snowmaking capabilities give Levi an advantage when snow reliability is a major priority.

For early season visitors: Which Has More Reliable Snow?

If you are travelling in November or early December, this question becomes particularly relevant.

Levi is further north than Rovaniemi, which generally means colder and more winter-like conditions earlier in the season. The ski resort also uses snowmaking to help maintain skiing conditions.

Rovaniemi can absolutely have a proper winter in November and December too, but early winter is less predictable than later in the season.

If having snowy landscapes and reliable skiing conditions is one of the main reasons you are travelling to Lapland, Levi has the advantage. If you are mainly coming for Santa Claus, restaurants, activities and the general Lapland experience, the difference may matter much less.

Restaurants and Shopping

This is one area where the difference between the destinations is particularly noticeable.

Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi has the advantage if you want variety and everyday services. You will find everything from casual restaurants and cafés to more specialised dining options. There are also supermarkets and shops where you can buy normal groceries, clothing and other things you may need during your trip.

This can be particularly useful for families or travellers staying for several days. You are not entirely dependent on tourist-oriented services.

Levi

Levi has a surprisingly good restaurant scene for a resort of its size.

You will find restaurants, cafés, bars and places to spend an evening after a day outdoors. However, the atmosphere is different. Much of Levi’s commercial centre is designed around the resort and its visitors.

So if your priority is maximum choice and everyday city services, Rovaniemi has the edge. If you want restaurants, bars and entertainment within a ski-resort environment, Levi may be more your style.

Can You Visit Both Rovaniemi and Levi?

If you have enough time, you don’t necessarily have to choose. Rovaniemi and Levi can work well as two different stops on the same Lapland trip.

You could start in Rovaniemi and experience Santa Claus Village, city restaurants and some of the classic first-time Lapland activities. Then continue to Levi for skiing, fell landscapes and a more resort-focused part of your holiday.

However, do not feel that you have to visit both just because they are popular. For a short two- or three-night trip, moving between destinations can add unnecessary logistics.

If you have a longer holiday, combining them becomes much more interesting.

So, Is Rovaniemi or Levi Better?

Neither. Rovaniemi and Levi are simply very different destinations.

Rovaniemi = city + services + Santa Claus + easy logistics + day trips

Levi = fell resort + skiing + outdoor activities + resort atmosphere + snow reliability

The better destination is the one that matches the holiday you actually want.

That might sound like an unsatisfying answer, but it is actually the most useful one.

Rovaniemi and Levi are simply different types of Lapland destinations.

Choose Rovaniemi if you want a city base, easy access to restaurants and shops, Santa Claus Village, lots of organised activities and relatively easy travel without a car.

Choose Levi if you want skiing, fell scenery, outdoor activities, a resort atmosphere and generally more reliable early-season snow conditions.
