How Many Days Should I Visit Lapland?

How many days do you actually need for a Lapland holiday?

There is no single right answer, but from a local point of view, we would recommend staying at least 4 days if you want to experience Lapland without feeling like you are constantly rushing from one activity to another.

Lapland is a place where the weather can change quickly, activities often take several hours and distances between places can be longer than they look on a map. It is also worth leaving some time for the things you cannot really plan: a quiet walk through the snowy forest, a sauna in the evening or simply watching the landscape from your accommodation.

For a relaxing Lapland holiday: 4 to 5 days

If your idea of a holiday is slowing down, enjoying nature and getting away from everyday life, you do not need a packed schedule. Four or five days gives you enough time to enjoy your accommodation, try a sauna, explore the surrounding nature and perhaps add one or two activities. This is the kind of trip where we would actually recommend doing less.

For an active holiday: 5 to 7 days

If you want to experience several of the classic Lapland activities, give yourself a little more time. With five to seven days, you can combine things like huskies, reindeer, snowmobiles, skiing, snowshoeing and a Northern Lights tour without having every hour of your holiday planned. It also gives you some flexibility. If the weather is not suitable for an activity one day, you have other days available to move things around.

Keep in mind that winter weather can be very cold, especially during the darkest part of the season. If you happen to get a particularly cold day, having a few extra days gives you the opportunity to move an outdoor activity to another day instead of missing it altogether.

For a family holiday: 4 to 6 days

For families, around five days is often a good balance. You can spend a day at Santa Claus Village, have a husky or reindeer experience, enjoy some snow activities and still have time for a slower day. With children especially, we would avoid planning a different big activity every day. Lapland can be exciting, but cold weather, early mornings and long days outside can also be tiring. A little downtime can make the whole holiday much more enjoyable.

For a Northern Lights holiday: 4 to 7 days

If the Northern Lights are your main reason for visiting, staying longer is definitely worth considering. The Aurora is a natural phenomenon, so nobody can guarantee that you will see it on a particular night. Clouds, snowfall and changing weather conditions can all affect visibility.

With four nights you already have several opportunities. With five to seven nights, you have considerably more flexibility to wait for a clear evening. And remember that Northern Lights hunting does not have to mean driving around every night. Sometimes the best experience is simply stepping outside your accommodation when the sky clears.

As a rough average, you might think of seeing the Northern Lights on around one night out of four, although the actual chances vary considerably depending on conditions and where you are staying.

This is exactly why we recommend staying several nights rather than planning a quick one or two night visit specifically for the Aurora.

If you want to explore more of Lapland: 7 to 10+ days

If you are not only visiting Rovaniemi but want to see more of Finnish Lapland, we would recommend at least a week.

Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs, Pyhä, Saariselkä and the northern parts of Lapland all have their own character. Distances are significant, so trying to see everything in just a few days can leave you spending more time in a car than enjoying the places you came to see. A longer trip also makes it possible to combine a lively destination with a quieter one.

Our recommendation: 5 to 6 days

For a first visit to Lapland, 5 to 6 days is our sweet spot. It is long enough to experience the highlights, have some flexibility with the weather and still enjoy the slower side of Lapland. If you can stay for a week, even better. Because Lapland is not just about huskies, snowmobiles and Santa Claus. Some of the best memories can come from the moments in between.
