When planning a trip to Lapland, many people think that meeting Santa will be the highlight of their adventure—and for good reason!
But remember, while Santa is a key attraction, he’s just one part of the enchanting experience that Lapland offers.
The Finnish Santa Experience
It’s important to know that the Santas you’ll meet in Rovaniemi (and all Lapland) are traditional Finnish Santas, not the Coca-Cola-inspired version that many places around the world is used to.
These Santas wear traditional Finnish costumes, often with long, flowing beards that reach down to their waists or knees, resembling a slightly more jolly version of Dumbledore or Gandalf. While these beards may not always be real, they certainly add to the authentic feel of the experience.
Making the Magic Real for Children
One of the most magical moments for kids is when Santa pulls out the letters they just posted to him at the Santa Claus Main Post Office—or before the trip.
To make this happen, you’ll need to do a bit of prep work. Have your kids write their letters to Santa before meeting him, then swap out the real letters for blank paper or make a copy.
In Lapland, all the elves and Santas are in on the plan. You can discreetly hand the letters to an elf before your kids’ turn, and they’ll ensure Santa receives them. When it’s your child’s moment with Santa, he will take out their letter and go over it with them, creating an unforgettable experience.
Where to Meet Santa in Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi offers several places to meet Santa, each with its own charm:

Santa Claus Office in Santa Claus Village
- Cost: Free
- Details: This is one of the most popular places to meet Santa. Your visit is photographed and filmed, and you can purchase these memories afterward. Although no gifts are provided, you can buy one at the entrance if you want your child to receive a gift during the visit. The Santa Claus Office is open every day of the year, but try to visit early or late to avoid the crowds during high season (December).
- If you want you can combine activities like meeting Santa with reindeer ride or city tour. You can find multiple guided tours on GetYourGuide* *Affiliate link. With no extra cost to you, I earn a small commission if you make a purchase.

Christmas House in Santa Claus Village
- Cost: Free
- Details: Similar to the Santa Claus Office, the Christmas House offers free visits with Santa, and you can buy photos afterward. If you’re staying at Santa Claus Village, you can even arrange for Santa to make a private visit to your cabin for €150 for up to four people. This location is also open daily year-round. BUT I have to say, I do not recommend this one. It it not nearly as well made as the Santa Claus Main Office right next door.

Santa Park
- Cost: Included with entrance fee
- Details: Santa Park offers more than just a Santa visit—it’s an entire Christmas experience. You can take your own photos or buy professional ones. Santa Park is usually open from the second week of November until the second week of January.

Santa’s City Office in Lordi’s Square
- Cost: Free
- Details: Located in the city of Rovaniemi, this Santa draws pictures and sells his artwork from a wooden hut. You can buy professional photos and then take your own, or if you don’t purchase theirs, you can’t take your own photos. Santa will even sign your photo for you! The Santa’s City Office is open from mid-November until mid-April. This big man is one of my favourites!!

Private Santa’s
- Cost: Varies
- Details: Private Santas are available around Rovaniemi, with prices that can vary widely, but they are not cheap. However, I can generally say that these experiences are so well-crafted that if your budget allows, they are usually worth every penny.
