Tips for Snow Seekers and What to Do When There’s No Snow

Setting Expectations

Every year, many travelers visit Lapland hoping for snowy landscapes as early as October or November. However, it’s important to know that Lapland does NOT always have snow that early!

Last winter (2023-24), we saw unusually early snowfall, which has led many visitors to expect the same this year. But as we say here, “years are not brothers to each other”—meaning each year is different.

If snow is the main reason for your visit, plan for mid-December at the earliest, or better yet, January, February, or March. These months are when you’re most likely to experience Lapland’s iconic winter wonderland at its best.

Here’s a straightforward breakdown of Lapland’s typical snow season to help you time your trip perfectly.

When Does Snow Arrive in Lapland?

October: Snow can arrive, but this is rare! October often only brings chilly temperatures, with landscapes still showing autumn hues.

November: While some years bring snow in November, it’s often just a thin, patchy cover. You might see a dusting that teases what’s to come but doesn’t create that classic winter look.

December: By mid-December, snow is usually here to stay. Still, it can vary from year to year. For those looking for that “Christmas winter magic” snow, this is the earliest you should plan.

January, February & March: By mid-January, Lapland is transformed into a true winter wonderland, with a thick blanket of snow and beautifully frosted forests. This period offers the most reliable, substantial snow cover, perfect for all classic winter activities.

Snow typically stays thick until mid- to late March, when temperatures gradually rise. By March, while there’s still plenty of snow on the ground, the snowy layers on trees start to melt, so don’t expect fully snow-covered trees as you might see earlier in the season.

Bottom Line: If you’re looking to experience the fully snowy winter wonderland, plan your trip from January onward.
