This summer, we spent a day with the family in Pyhä-Luosto National Park, easily one of my favorite hiking destinations in Lapland during the summer (and autumn).

Pyhä-Luosto National Park offers a breathtaking escape into nature. While it’s maybe more known for its winter activities, the park transforms into a lush, vibrant landscape in summer, making it an ideal destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

One of the most enchanting and beginner-friendly hikes in Pyhä-Luosto National Park is the route to Karhunjuomalampi. This serene lake, nestled in the heart of the park, offers a peaceful retreat and stunning natural beauty. The hike itself is quite manageable, with only a few challenging climbs or long staircases, depending on which direction you take. Our 7 years old dashed the entire route in rubber boots, having slipped out to the car unnoticed as we left.

Trail Overview

Distance: around 7 km round trip

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: Approximately 3-4 hours

Getting There

The trail to Karhunjuomalampi starts at the Pyhä-Luosto Visitor Centre Naava, located in Pyhätunturi village. The visitor center provides detailed maps, information about the park, and insights into the local flora and fauna. It’s an excellent place to start your adventure and ensure you’re well-prepared.

The Hike to Karhunjuomalampi

1. Starting Point: Pyhä-Luosto Visitor Centre Naava

Begin your hike at the visitor center, where you can pick up a trail map and check the weather conditions. Do you need a map? Not really, only to find the starting point of the hike is bit tricky, but the track it self is really easy to follow.

Tip: If you hate stairs like I do, walk the path from end to start.

2. Initial Ascent: Lush Forests and Boardwalks

The first part of the trail takes you through dense, ancient forests. The path is well-maintained with wooden boardwalks in some sections, ensuring a comfortable hike even in damp conditions. As you walk, you’ll be surrounded by tall pines and spruces, with the forest floor covered in vibrant moss and lichen.

3. Midway Point: Isokuru Gorge

About halfway to Karhunjuomalampi, you’ll encounter the majestic Isokuru Gorge. This dramatic canyon is the deepest in Finland and offers breathtaking views of steep cliffs and unique geological formations. There are stairs and platforms that allow you to safely navigate the gorge while taking in its grandeur. The Isokuru Gorge is not just about its depth; it also showcases a fascinating array of geological features. The stark, vertical rock faces reveal layers of ancient sediment, while the surrounding forested slopes add a touch of greenery to the stark landscape.

4. Continuing On: Crossing Streams and Climbing Hills

After passing through the gorge, the trail continues with gentle ascents and descents, crossing several small streams. These pristine waters provide a refreshing break and an opportunity to appreciate the park’s natural beauty.

5. Approaching Karhunjuomalampi: The Final Stretch

As you near Karhunjuomalampi, the forest begins to thin, and you’ll catch glimpses of the lake through the trees. The path here is relatively flat, allowing for a leisurely walk as you approach your destination.
